What Questions Should I Ask a Seller on my Introductory Phone Call With Them?

One of the questions we get from Buyers looking to acquire a firm and they’re having their first Introductory Phone Call with the seller, is “What Questions Can or Should I be Asking Them on The Phone Call?”

The general rule of thumb for you the potential buyer, or the seller for that matter is:

Any question to ask is okay as long as you don’t ask about or discuss value or in other words, the price or terms of a potential purchase.

Questions about clients can be generic like ‘What kind of businesses do your work with mostly?’

Questions about any staff can be phrased such as ‘Tell me about the background & experience of your employees.’

These introductory calls are usually the first of a couple or several phone calls, Zoom meetings or physical meetings you’ll have with the seller. They’re like dating where you’re just trying to get to know the person and see if there’s any chemistry and reason to take the next step in learning about this firm you might want to acquire.
